Fast enough on right of people?

Putting Bavarian housewives before disadvantaged children

Published: 9 Nov 11 15:46 CET
Bavarian conservatives’ insistence on paying parents to keep their children out of public day care has made a mockery of Angela Merkel’s family policies, writes Der Tagesspiegel’s Hans Monath.
As Chancellor Merkel’s centre-right coalition held torturous deliberations to hammer out contentious tax cuts last weekend, Germany’s finance minister was naturally there.

The country’s family minister, however, wasn’t at the table as Merkel’s conservatives, their Bavarian allies, and the Free Democrats agreed to implement a subsidy for families opting out of sending their children to day care known asBetreuungsgeld.

The fractious coalition has decided to introduce this hefty state entitlement with wide-ranging societal implications at a time when its coffers are empty.

Rather than building day-care centres and improving other facilities for children, the government has chosen to increase direct payments to single-earner families, which are already afforded tax breaks and subsidized health care premiums.

Mistaken fathers can find out who's the daddy

Published: 10 Nov 11 07:22 CET
German men who have been paying financial support for children they wrongly believed to be theirs, have been awarded the right to find out who the real fathers are.
The Federal Courts of Justice ruled on Wednesday that mothers no longer had the right to keep the mistaken men in the dark – and had to tell them who the real daddies were.

This continues a legal trend in Germany of making it increasingly difficult for mothers to hide the identity of the father of their children – the Constitutional Court recently ruled that children had the right to discover who their fathers were. Its judgement put the right of the child to know, above the right of the woman to keep the secret.

Apple patent suggests new iPod features

The ipod nano and shuffle could have a speaker added to the clip according to a newly published patent by Apple.
The ipod nano and shuffle could have a speaker added to the clip according to a newly published patent by Apple.
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • A patent shows how Apple could add a speaker to the clip on the iPod shuffle or iPod nano
  • Apple CEO Tim Cook said iPod is a "large and important product" for the company
  • NPD analyst Ross Rubin says future nanos could be worn on wrists with social media updates
(WIRED) -- Passing earwax-tainted earbuds between friends is nobody's favorite way to share iPod tunes. An integrated speaker in the smaller iPod nano and iPod shuffle models could end that practice for good, and provide opportunity for a host of new iPod possibilities.
A newly published Apple patent describes how Apple could add a teeny speaker dome to the clip on the iPod shuffle or iPod nano. It's a sneaky way to add some extra functionality to Apple's smallest media players -- all without adding any extra bulk.
According to the patent, which was broken down by Patently Apple, the addition of a speaker would be a "natural evolutionary step for their media players."

German population to shrink by a fifth by 2060

Published: 28 Oct 11 17:05 CET
Germany's population will plunge by 17 million inhabitants – a fifth of its current size – by 2060, according to a demography study presented by Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich this week.
The report will serve as the basis for government policy to cope with the dramatic decline.

“The management of demographic change is one of the major tasks for the future," said Friedrich at a press conference in Berlin.

He also said the survey could provide a stimulus to modernize the country, which has become increasingly concerned about its ageing population and declining birth rate in recent years. Statisticians now expect that the German population will plunge 21 percent to 65 million by 2060.

Germany’s biggest airport was expanded by a runway on Friday, when Chancellor Angela Merkel ceremonially landed in Frankfurt on it in a government plane.
The planning and construction took 14 years, and was prompted by a 1997 call by the then chair of Lufthansa’s board, JÞrgen Weber, for an expansion of the airport.

“If the infrastructure is not further developed, the airport will one day no longer be the economic motor of the region,” he said, according to a report in Friday’sFrankfurt Allgemeine Zeitung.

It is hoped the fourth runway will keep Frankfurt as a major international hub along with London’s Heathrow and Dubai – even though it is too short for a Boeing 747 or Airbus 380 to land on.

Business confidence drops again amid crisis

Published: 21 Oct 11 11:55 CET
German business confidence deteriorated for the fourth month in a row in October, data showed on Friday, as Europe's economic powerhouse begins to feel the pain of the region's debt crisis.
The monthly Ifo business climate index fell by one full point to 106.4 points in October, its lowest level in just over a year.

The decline may not have been quite as steep as expected – economists had been pencilling in a fractionally steeper drop to 106.3 or 106.2 points – but the data showed that the eurozone's debt crisis is making companies perceptibly nervous about the future, analysts said.

Chinese tourists to the rescue in California

Part of a new gold rush, Chinese visitors shelled out US$1.86 billion in the financially troubled state last year, the most among all international visitors

Say, "Straight cash, homie." For Chinese tourists in California, spending money like it's going out of style isn't going out of style.
China, the world’s most populous country, has sent California, the most populous state in the United States, a very expensive and in-demand gift.
Chinese travelers have become the single biggest overseas spenders in the beach-lined state, with each Chinese visitor forking over an average of US$6,800 during their stays, according to Huang Zhiheng (éŧ„čŠ·č˜…), chief China representative of the California Travel and Tourism Commission (CTTC). Huang made his comments to the 21st Century Business Herald.
According to CTTC Asia marketing director Antonette Eckert, around 52 percent of Chinese tourists visited California during their trips to the United States in 2010, making the Golden State the most popular U.S. destination for Chinese travelers.
This means that 273,000 of the 525,000 Chinese tourists who visited the United States last year set foot in the economically troubled state, dropping a total of US$1.86 billion into the state’s tourism pocket
