Facebook seeks world champion hacker

Facebook's first Hacker Cup, held in March, drew 25 finalists from 10 countries.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Think your programming skills are world class? Facebook wants you to prove it at its second annual Hacker Cupchallenge.

"Hacking is core to how we build at Facebook," the company said in a blog post announcing this year's competition. "Whether we're building a prototype for a major product like Timeline at a Hackathon, creating a smarter search algorithm, or tearing down walls at our new headquarters, we're always hacking to find better ways to solve problems."

Open to coders anywhere in the world, Facebook's competition pits participants against each other in five rounds of programming challenges. The first kicks off January 20 with a 72-hour qualification round. Three more online rounds will thin the field down to the final 25 competitors, who will be flown out to Facebook's Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters for a final competition in March.

The winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize. Last year, nearly 12,000 programmers participated in the Hacker's Cup. Petr Mitrichev, a Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) employee from Russia, took home the top prize. (In a nicely ironic twist, Mitrichev wore his Google employee badgeduring the competition.)

Tech companies have an ulterior motive for running hacking contest: They're a great way to find skilled programmers, one of the industry'sscarcest resources. Google runs an annual Code Jam contest, whichMitrichev won in 2006.

Facebook prides itself on its hacker culture, and dangles coding puzzles on its recruiting page with the slogan: "Solve programming challenges. Get a phone interview." The company frequently holds marathon staff hackathons as part of its product-development process.

Facebook also likes to crowdsource its site hacking. In August, the social network launched a "bug bounty" security initiative, inviting security researchers to send details of any Facebook vulnerabilities they uncover. Facebook offers up a finder's fee of at least $500 to those who find security holes.

ก่อนวันคริสมาสก็มีของขวัญส่งมา นี่มันตัว Cut the rope (เกมไอโฟน) หรือเปล่า มาเป็นกล่องๆ และดันเป็นกล่องสีชมพูด้วย ว้าวๆ ตื่นเต้น มีคำใบ้เล็กๆ ที่อยู่มุมซ้ายล่างของกล่องด้วย เหมือนจะใบ้ๆ ว่า เป็นกล้อง กล้องอะไร และใครยังไง

ที่แท้ก็คือ Nikon J1 ครับ Mirrorless ตัวแรกของจักรวาล (ขอโฆษณาคล้ายๆ กระบะยี่ห้อหนึ่ง) จากทาง Nikon จุ๋มจิ๋มน่ารักในกล่องชมพูสุดสวย เปิดมาก็เห็นเป็นแผ่นโปรแกรมอย่างชัดเจนครับ แต่ไม่ใช่ Nikon NX แต่เป็น View NX สำหรับเปิดไฟล์ RAW และตัดต่อวิดีโอแบบง่ายๆ ครับ

หลังจากเปิดกล่องออกทั้งหมดแล้ว เขย่าแล้วก็มีประมาณนี้ครับ ซึ่งน่าจะใกล้เคียงกับกล้องจริงๆ ที่ขากัน ประกอบด้วย กล้อง (แน่นอนต้องมี) ซีดีโปรแกรม ที่ชาร์จแบบแปะฝาผนังไม่ต้องมีสายให้วุ่นวาย เลนส์สำหรับกล้องNikon 1 สองตัวนั่นคือ Nikkor 10-30mm VR และ Nikkor 30-110mm VR ครบชุดเที่ยวได้ทั่วโลก

The Holy grail จะเห็นได้ว่าขนาดเหมือนกับจอกสุราที่ร้านหอนางโลมแดงไม่มีผิด หลายคนเข้าใจผิดจากการใช้กล้อง DSLR มาก่อนว่า Nikkor 10-30mm VR นั้นเป็นเลนส์ Wide คำตอบคือไม่ใช่ครับ เพราะเซนเซอร์ของกล้อง J1 นี้ พี่แกใช้ Crop Factor 2.7 คือ เล็กกว่า Full Frame ถึง 2.7 เท่า ไม่ใช่ DSLR นิค่อนที่อยู่ที่ 1.5 เท่า จริงๆ ถ้าแถมเป็นเลนส์ Wide ก็ดีนะคงโปนเป็น Fisheye แน่นอน เลนส์เล็กๆ ตัวนี้รับรองได้ว่าคุณภาพไม่เล็กเหมือนตัวแน่นอนครับโดยเฉพาะ Normal 10-30mm เทียบเท่า 27-80mm ครับ ส่วน 30-110mm ก็ประมาณ 80-300mm อะไรประมาณนี้ครับ ว้าวๆ ซูมถล่มเลยทีเดียว

แม้ว่าจะกล้องเซนเซอร์ขนาดเล็กกว่าชาวบ้านเค้า และมีเลนส์ที่ขนาดเล็กด้วย แต่คุณภาพก็ไม่ถึงกับว่าเป็นคอมแพคอะไรขนาดนั้น เดี๋ยวหน้าถัดไปมีรูปตัวอย่างให้ดูกัน ผมทดสอบที่บางปูเลยทีเดียว ถามว่าทดสอบโหดไปไม๊ โหดไปครับ กล้องเล็กหลายคนต้องคิดว่าถ่ายนกไม่ไหวแหงๆ เดี๋ยวมาดูกัน

สเปคคร่าวๆ แทบจะไม่ต่างจากกล้อง DSLR เลยครับ

As Chancellor Merkel’s centre-right coalition held torturous deliberations to hammer out contentious tax cuts last weekend, Germany’s finance minister was naturally there.

The country’s family minister, however, wasn’t at the table as Merkel’s conservatives, their Bavarian allies, and the Free Democrats agreed to implement a subsidy for families opting out of sending their children to day care known asBetreuungsgeld.

The fractious coalition has decided to introduce this hefty state entitlement with wide-ranging societal implications at a time when its coffers are empty.

Rather than building day-care centres and improving other facilities for children, the government has chosen to increase direct payments to single-earner families, which are already afforded tax breaks and subsidized health care premiums.

The Federal Courts of Justice ruled on Wednesday that mothers no longer had the right to keep the mistaken men in the dark – and had to tell them who the real daddies were.

This continues a legal trend in Germany of making it increasingly difficult for mothers to hide the identity of the father of their children – the Constitutional Court recently ruled that children had the right to discover who their fathers were. Its judgement put the right of the child to know, above the right of the woman to keep the secret.

(WIRED) -- Passing earwax-tainted earbuds between friends is nobody's favorite way to share iPod tunes. An integrated speaker in the smaller iPod nano and iPod shuffle models could end that practice for good, and provide opportunity for a host of new iPod possibilities.

A newly published Apple patent describes how Apple could add a teeny speaker dome to the clip on the iPod shuffle or iPod nano. It's a sneaky way to add some extra functionality to Apple's smallest media players -- all without adding any extra bulk.

According to the patent, which was broken down by Patently Apple, the addition of a speaker would be a "natural evolutionary step for their media players."

The planning and construction took 14 years, and was prompted by a 1997 call by the then chair of Lufthansa’s board, Jürgen Weber, for an expansion of the airport.

“If the infrastructure is not further developed, the airport will one day no longer be the economic motor of the region,” he said, according to a report in Friday’sFrankfurt Allgemeine Zeitung.

It is hoped the fourth runway will keep Frankfurt as a major international hub along with London’s Heathrow and Dubai – even though it is too short for a Boeing 747 or Airbus 380 to land on.

Say, "Straight cash, homie." For Chinese tourists in California, spending money like it's going out of style isn't going out of style.

China, the world’s most populous country, has sent California, the most populous state in the United States, a very expensive and in-demand gift.

Chinese travelers have become the single biggest overseas spenders in the beach-lined state, with each Chinese visitor forking over an average of US$6,800 during their stays, according to Huang Zhiheng (黄芷蘅), chief China representative of the California Travel and Tourism Commission (CTTC). Huang made his comments to the 21st Century Business Herald.

According to CTTC Asia marketing director Antonette Eckert, around 52 percent of Chinese tourists visited California during their trips to the United States in 2010, making the Golden State the most popular U.S. destination for Chinese travelers.

This means that 273,000 of the 525,000 Chinese tourists who visited the United States last year set foot in the economically troubled state, dropping a total of US$1.86 billion into the state’s tourism pocket

In 2003, 100.000 people marched against the Iraq war – and the extremely unpopular Portuguese Government of the then PM, Jose Barroso – in the capital city, Lisbon. The story did not even meet the inside pages of the international press. Yet when a few thousand Russians stage a demonstration in Kaliningrad, the story flies around the international media community for the following two weeks.

Then there are two stories – the myth and the reality. The most recent opinion poll carried out by VTSIOM, the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center, published this week, indicates that most Russians are satisfied with their lives.

The number of people who describe their situation as favourable continues to grow, the number of people who describe their life as hard continues to fall and the number of people who say they are living in intolerable stress declines (respectively, from 23 to 31%; 62 to 56% and 14 to 11%). The expression “hope” outweighed “disappointment” and “concern” with a view to describing the day-to-day life in the Russian Federation.

49% felt at worst “indifference”, and at best “confidence”, “tranquillity” and “joy”, while “anger” and “fury” represented only 8% of the 1.600 people who responded to the poll conducted in 140 towns and cities and 42 regions of Russia.

In the recent local elections (two weeks ago), United Russia won an overwhelming majority of the vote (more than twice the second-placed party and more than the three opposition parties put together) with around 50 per cent of the poll.

A recent poll conducted by the insurance company Rosgosstrakh reveals that about 80 per cent of Russians are happy and satisfied with their living standards. A poll among Russian citizens in 138 cities shows that the average satisfaction rate is 78 per cent and that the figures depicting the minimum satisfaction rates exceed 50 per cent.

One day, in a parallel universe, when President Palin declares martial law (now there’s a movie…) I shall probably be indicted for my 39 (and counting) Crimes Against Cinema (I’m an enthusiastic recidivist). The Prosecutor will inevitably ask me the question: “When did you first decide to make films?” I remember that night well…

We lived in the small English village of Odiham in Hampshire. 3000 people, 7 pubs, one picture palace - The Regal. I was 13 years old, and for the first time I was allowed to go to the movies on a winter’s night by myself. (My mother, bless her, was a little over-protective, hence my later flirtation with stunts.) To get to the Regal on the outskirts of town, I had to walk through the cemetery of the Norman era church. Dark shadows. Wisps of fog. Knowing I was going to see a film crafted by a director dubbed the Master of Suspense made the graveyard all the spookier.

This is just the latest in a series of escalating lawsuits between the two companies regarding their respective mobile and consumer electronic devices.
This lawsuit -- which unlike the others was filed in the Federal District Court in the Western District of Wisconsin -- is about technologies related to enhanced speech and data transmission.
In a statement, Nokia described this technology as "positioning data in applications and innovations in antenna configurations that improve performance and save space, allowing smaller and more compact devices."
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment on this story.

The new Secretary’s International Fund for Women and Girls will provide grants to non-governmental organizations working for the economic, social and political advancement of women worldwide. Tech Women will offer Silicon Valley mentorship to women living in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, the West Bank and Gaza. The first APEC Women Entrepreneurship Summit will be staged in partnership with Japan. ‘Hard choices’ on U.S. aid reform

The international development community this week got its most detailed glimpse yet of draft plans to overhaul U.S. foreign assistance. A leaked White House paper suggests the creation of an interagency panel to spearhead aid policy and outlines steps to refocus operations on key strategic goals.

The draft, which is not final, raised more questions than it answered, especially about the exact relationship between the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Department of State. But a political firestorm may be brewing.

“The new White House plan to ‘elevate development as a pillar of national security strategy, equal to diplomacy and defense’ may spark the biggest political fight over development since Jesse Helms made the head of development report to the Secretary of State,” wrote Patrick Cronin in a May 4 opinion piece, referring to the former North Carolina senator who in the 1990s spearheaded efforts to marginalize USAID.

As a candidate for U.S. president, Barack Obama campaigned on the bold promise to double foreign assistance and revamp a bloated aid bureaucracy spread across the federal government. The draft paper indicates that he is not willing to go as far as many within the development community had hoped: The leaked document does not mention a cabinet-level “aid czar.”

USAID, however, appears to be on an upswing. The leaked document suggests beefing up capacity in budgeting as well as policy and planning, and on May 5, USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah announced the creation of a policy and planning bureau, a move that was praised by the U.S. Senate’s top foreign policy experts.

The Obama administration remains engaged in two parallel foreign policy reviews: the State Department-led Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review and the National Security Council-led presidential study directive on global development policy, which resulted in the leaked draft, according to Josh Rogin of the Foreign Policy magazine’s The Cable blog. But many issues remain unclear, including how exactly USAID and the State Department would collaborate on foreign assistance, and how the “hard choices” outlined in the leaked draft would affect USAID funding.

Congressional leaders have vowed to move ahead with reform even without clear guidance from the White House.

As a head of state, Queen Elizabeth has numerous traditional roles when it comes to elections and government, yet these are usually no more than ceremonial.
However, as with Thursday's vote that saw the opposition Conservatives secure more seats than Prime Minister Gordon Brown's Labour Party but not enough to form a working government, the queen's position becomes more complicated.

Michael Kutschenreuter, 55, received a two-year suspended sentence and a fine of €60,000. The court in the southern city of Munich also ordered him to pay €100,000 to charity.

A former financial director at Siemens' telecommunications division, Kutschenreuter is the most senior executive so far to be found guilty of corruption by a German court in the wake of the scandal.

The other man, Hans-Werner Hartmann, also 55, received an 18-month suspended sentence and was ordered to pay €40,000 to charity.

The pair took part in a wide-ranging bribery scandal whereby executives slipped cash to foreign officials in exchange for landing lucrative contracts.

Some €1.3 billion was paid out in bribes between 2000 and 2006, making it the biggest scandal in corporate German history.

วันนี้ (21 เม.ย.) น.ส.วิมล คิดชอบ อธิบดีกรมสารนิเทศ และโฆษกกระทรวงการต่างประเทศ กล่าวถึง กรณีที่โจรสลัดชาวโซมาเลียจี้เรือประมงไทย 3 ลำ พร้อมด้วยลูกเรือ 77 คน ห่างจากชายฝั่งโซมาเลียราว 1,930 กิโลเมตร ว่า หลังจากที่กระทรวงการต่างประเทศได้รับแจ้งข้อมูลดังกล่าวจากเจ้าของเรือ เราได้ส่งโทรเลขสั่งการไปที่สถานเอกอัครราชทูตไทย ประจำกรุงไนโรบี ประเทศเคนยา ซึ่งดูแลครอบคลุมถึงประเทศโซมาเลียด้วย เมื่อวันที่ 19 เม.ย.ที่ผ่านมา เพื่อให้ประสานงานกับหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องในการช่วยเหลือเรือประมงไทย 3 ลำ และลูกเรือไทย 12 คน ที่ถูกจับ ทั้งนี้ ที่จริงแล้วในเรื่องนี้มีศูนย์ประสานการปฎิบัติในการรักษาผลประโยชน์ของชาติ ทางทะเล (ศรชล.) ของกองทัพเรือ เข้ามาให้ความช่วยเหลือ ซึ่งตนทราบว่าวันนี้ ได้มีการประชุมกัน และมีการประสานงานกับกองทัพเรือของชาติพันธมิตรที่อยู่ในแถบนั้นด้วย เพื่อขอให้ช่วยติดตามเรือประมงไทยที่ถูกจับ ตอนนี้จึงถือว่ามีการประสานงานกันในส่วนของที่ทางกระทรวงฯ ทำไป และส่วนที่เป็นเครือข่ายที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการดูแลความปลอดภัยทางทะเล โฆษกกระทรวงการต่างประเทศ กล่าวอีกว่า ขณะนี้เจ้าของเรือยังไม่ได้รับการติดต่อจากกลุ่มโจรสลัดว่าเขาเรียกร้องอะไร ทราบแต่เพียงว่าเรือประมง และลูกเรือถูกจับ ส่วนการประสานกับทางการโซมาเลียในเรื่องดังกล่าวนั้น เราทำผ่านช่องทางสถานเอกอัครราชทูตไทยในเคนยา ให้รีบประสานงานกับทางการโซมาเลีย เมื่อถามว่า จะขอให้รัฐบาลโซมาเลียจัดการแก้ปัญหาโจรสลัดโซมาเลียโดยเด็ดขาดหรือไม่ น.ส.วิมล กล่าวว่า เรื่องนี้เป็นเรื่องระดับนานาชาติ ซึ่งหลายประเทศที่เคยได้รับผลกระทบจากปัญหาดังกล่าวมีการพูดคุยกัน และพยายามผลักดันการแก้ไขกันมาตลอด แต่กรณีของโจรสลัดแถบนั้น ก็ค่อนข้างจะแข็งแรง จึงต้องมีการแก้ปัญหานี้อย่างต่อเนื่อง และต้องอาศัยความร่วมมือของหลายประเทศที่ได้รับผลกระทบ.

Washington (CNN) -- For Goldman Sachs, a large financial investment in President Obama does not appear to be paying off.
Wall Street's top investment bank was a generous contributor to Obama's presidential campaign.

The company has defended itself from civil fraud charges filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission and, along with the rest of the financial services sector, fended off an aggressive Democratic-led campaign to impose new rules on banks.

(CNN) -- Moments after Saturday morning's earthquake in Chile, the Internet and its social networks came alive with earthquake and tsunami information.
Twitter users following #Chile and #tsunami directed one another to media and government sites with helpful information and guidance, as well as the usual rumors, lies and folklore.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center is issuing regular updates. It includes estimated arrival times for numerous countries around the Pacific Rim. Click on the pink box near the top of the page. You must refresh the landing page to get later updates.

Paris, France (CNN) -- Western Europe was dealing with the aftermath of violent weather Monday after a winter storm dubbed "Xynthia" battered at least six countries, leaving at least 58 people dead, authorities said.
Hardest hit was France, where at least 47 people were killed, according to the Interior Ministry.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy visited the departments of Charente-Maritime and Vendee on the nation's west coast Monday, where the extra-tropical cyclone hit.
"It's a national catastrophe," French Prime Minister Francois Fillon said Sunday. "Many people drowned, surprised by the rapid rise of the water."
The combination of hurricane-force winds and high tide inundated parts of the coastal region.

A tempestade Xynthia já está em França e com um balanço de tragédia – 53 mortos e danos materiais, por enquanto, incalculáveis.
Esta segunda-feira, as autoridades devem pedir à União Europeia que accione o fundo de solidariedade, para ajudar a França a enfrentar os estragos. Muita gente, viu a morte à frente dos olhos e não esquece esses momentos de angústia.
“Esta noite, saí da minha casa a nadar, pela casa de banho. Depois, refugiei-me em cima de umas máquinas das obras, em frente da minha casa. Passei a noite com o meu marido sobre as máquinas, deitada ao comprido, de bruços, para sentir, o menos possível, o impacte do vento. Esperámos por socorros que chegram esta manhã”, contou uma mulher.
O primeiro-ministro, François Fillon, não tem dúvidas de que se trata de uma autêntica “catástrofe nacional”.
Os mais idosos causaram preocupação. Uma mulher contou o drama dos seus pais:
“Esperei que salvassem os meus pais. Eles estavam bloqueados, na mansarda desde as quatro horas desta manhã. Não foram socorridos. É muito inquietante, muito inquietante, porque ele disse-me que a maré estava a subir. Agora, não têm electricidade. São idosos de mais de 70 anos”.
E não há quem tenha memória de qualquer coisa de semelhante. Nas costa sudoeste de França, as ruas estão transformadas em Rios. A água invadiu as casas, quase até aos telhados.
O Governo reuniu o seu gabinete de emergência para concertar medidas e fazer o balanço. O Presidente da República, Nicolas Sarkozy vai passar esta segunda-feira, nas regiões mais fustigadas.
Alemanha e Bélgica estão agora da rota da tempestade.

Xinthia ha causato vittime anche in Germania. Il vento che soffiava a 110 chilometri orari si è abbattuto sull’ovest del Paese, e gli alberi che si sono schiantati al suolo hanno provocato la morte di quattro persone. Le zone più colpite dalla tempesta sono state quelle di Colonia, di Francoforte e la Foresta nera.
“La cosa migliore con questo tempo -dice il meteorologo Peter Hartmann – è, se possibile, restare a casa. A volte bisogna attraversare la foresta con l’auto. Ma certe strade sono già bloccate. Per cui chi può è meglio che resti a casa”.
Nella zona colpita dalla tempesta molti treni sono rimasti bloccati durante il viaggio, tra le proteste dei passeggeri. Il traffico ferroviario ha registrato pesanti ritardi.
Situazione difficile anche all’aeroporto internazionale di Francoforte dove più di 200 voli, sui 1270 previsti durante la giornata, sono stati cancellati.

Washington (CNN) -- Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Thursday that a "new information curtain is descending across much of the world."
In a speech on Internet freedom and security, Clinton also urged China to investigate a wave of cyber attacks against Google and other companies.
The Internet and other technologies are critical to foreign policy, and those who engage in cyber attacks should face international condemnation, she said.
"In an interconnected world, an attack on one nation's networks can be an attack on all," she said at The Newseum in Washington.
Clinton made the comments as search-engine giant Google threatened to shut down its operations in China, five years after agreeing to allow some censorship in exchange for the right to work in that country's massive emerging technology market.
Google charges that Chinese hackers have targeted Google and up to 34 other companies.
